Welcome to the Munich Graduate School of Economics
The Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) offers a distinguished three-year Ph.D. program in Economics to outstanding young and motivated researchers. In addition, positions for post-doctoral researchers are available.
The MGSE is part of the Department of Economics at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich. The department is ranked among the top economic educational institutions in Europe and is reputed for its theoretical and empirical research in combination with policy relevant issues.
Doctoral students at the MGSE are provided with thorough training in advanced methods in economics. They are taken to the frontier of state-of-the-art research. Members are integrated into a stimulating research environment composed of an ambitious and excellent faculty and a large network of research institutions and facilities.
At the MGSE, the German Research Foundation supports up to twelve excellent doctoral students per year with a three-year scholarship in our Research Training Group (DFG-Graduiertenkolleg).
Applications to the MGSE are welcome from students who hold a Master's degree or a German university Diploma in economics or a closely related field, passed with distiction. Candidates need to prove a strong quantitative background as well as interest and ability to conduct independent research.

We are looking for people with excellent grades in their undergraduate (or graduate) programmes.
In principle, the intake requirements are Toefl/IELTS tests (which test your command of English) and the GRE or GMAT which most PhD programmes around the world require.
Toefl/IELTS can be waived in case an applicant’s previous programme was entirely in English.

The applications deadline is 1 February, but the deadline could be extended for very good candidates. For students who do not require a visa, the application deadline is 1 July. The starting date is 1 September, although a pre-programme course starts in the final week of August.
